LastPass - The Basics
In this article we'll cover: Where LastPass is located. How to log in to LastPass. Exploring the LastPass app. Create a card in LastPass' Vault. See LastPass in action. 1. Where is LastPass located? By default, Local IT installs LastPass in the Chrome browser. If you find that it is missing from Chrome or wish to install this on a preferred browser then follow the directions at the end of this section. LastPass is really a mini program that sits within your browser. These mini programs are called browser extensions, and they work with your browser to do certain things. All extension can be found in the extension manager that sits on the address bar. In Chrome, this looks like a puzzle piece. Usually the LastPass extension sits beside it. Now the LastPass app is installed on Firefox. Follow the above steps to pin LastPass to the address bar so that it is in easy reach. 2. How to Log In 3. Exploring the app. Here are the separate mini-panel views for the Generator, Alerts, and Account. Let's delve into Alerts and Accounts a little deeper. First Alerts. Click on the Alert icon, then the red "Protect yourself" button. This takes you to your Security Dashboard. The next one I want to show you is the Account settings. There is more to explore in each of these settings but for this article it is time to move on to your Vault. This is my Vault and it has a lot of things already in it. Yours might appear differently, but the lay out will be the same. Let's take a look around. 4.Creating A Card It's time to see what LastPass can do. I'll cover the sharing aspect, like shared card management, in more in-depth in another article, but for now, if you need to share a card with someone because they need to access the same account, with the same credentials, this is what you do after you've clicked on the sharing icon. See the LastPass - Sharing Card Management article for more in-depth details, including how to revoke a shared card when the recipient doesn't need it. (Article coming soon) For now, let's look at some of the other items LastPass can store. 5. Seeing LastPass in Action To see this in action I am going to go to three different sites. The first site I already have a card in my Vault for. The second site is one where I know the login information but I do not have a Vault card setup. The last site will be one that I want to become a member of. Let's see how LastPass deals with each of these situations. For this example, I already have an account with this site but I have not yet added the information to my Vault. I could go to my Vault and do that, but LastPass can also do this on the fly for me. In this last example, I'm signing up for a website I've never been on before. Here I'm going to use LastPass' password generator to help me come up with a strong password. And remember, I don't need to memorize the password because LastPass will do it for me. . That is the basics in a nutshell. Look out for more LastPass How-Tos on other elements of this great security app.
